Our Moral Obligation


 

 

A little less than a month ago, Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn), issued a statement along with 43 other Catholic members of Congress on immigration enforcement. They said that as Catholic members of Congress they are guided by “living Catholic tradition” that affirms the dignity of human life to protect the most vulnerable in our society.

 

While agreeing that every nation has the legitimate authority to control their borders, the statement also recognizes the right to migrate and seek protection. Stating clearly that ICE/CPB have failed the moral standard of justice and mercy and called on the White House to respect our Nation’s legal obligations which are being violated every day.

 

This call applies not just to Catholics but applies to any member of Congress claiming to be a Christian, for as Christians we are called to protect the poor and vulnerable, not the wealthy interests seeking to buy favor. As Jesus continues his journey, how do we join him?  Certainly not by tearing families apart and silently acquiescing to policies that are inimical to our Nation’s heritage.

 

Prayer for the Day

 

You have searched us and known us, O God,

    And we are unable to pretend we are something we are not;

Forgive us our despair, our hopelessness, and our fear,

     For we know that they close the doors to living faithfully. 

 Awaken us by your Holy Spirit to a fuller dimension of faith

     Leading us to find new opportunities for justice and peace.

  In the name of the One who teaches us a new way to live,

Thoughts for the Day

 

Sacred Scripture consistently reminds us of our obligation toward the vulnerable and displaced. Jesus himself identifies with the migrant when he says, “I was a stranger and you welcomed me” (Mt 25:35).
