The question is not when will the protests in Los Angeles end, but how they will end. Between calling out the National Guard and deploying 700 Marines to LA streets, these actions can only increase the anger and fear felt not just in LA but across the Nation. In addition, the idea of the President calling for the arrest of a Governor because he opposes the use of troops in a city is more than outrageous. It is dangerous.
Most of the protesting was peaceful and the LAPD was handling the violence that did erupt. This made for TV production created by calling in the National Guard can only enhance the picture that DHS wants to create.
It seems that at least some of the immigrants picked up over the weekend were deported without even a semblance of due process. Is this how we treat people? It’s not just illegal. It’s immoral.
Prayer for the Day
Called to be your witnesses, we are often silent,
For we are unsure how to respond to injustice and evil;
Unsettled by events around us, we are fearful,
For we are concerned about consequences for ourselves.
Forgive our frailty, our fear, and our weaknesses,
Transform us into a people of strength and courage.
In the name of the Transformer of our lives, `
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
ICE also denied entry to Members of Congress — who have the legal authority and responsibility to conduct unannounced oversight visits — at both the LA detention center, where people were being held, as well as the Adelanto Detention Center, where detained people were reportedly transferred.
Pramila Jayapal, U.S. Representative (D-WA)
This is really to prevent us from doing our jobs.
Jimmy Gomez, U.S. Representative.(D-CA)
It was “unconscionable” that federal agents would spray an irritant at members of Congress (in response to request to enter the federal detention center)
Nidia Torres, U.S. Representative (F-CA)
Seek good and not evil, that you may live;
And so the Lord, the God of hosts will be with you,
Just as you have said.
Hate evil and love good, and establish justice in the gate;
It may be that the Lord, the God of hosts,
Will be gracious to the remnants of Joseph.
