Have you ever looked around a room in your house or apartment and wondered: Why am I keeping this item? At one point, I thought it was just books that overwhelmed me, the ones that I probably won’t get to, the ones I’ve read but just can’t part with, but then I realize it’s other stuff as well. Sorting out and organizing the mementos of one’s life is a daunting task, to be sure.
Little by little, I keep trying to decide what to give to whom. What do I do with all those arm rest covers my aunt tatted or crocheted? Last fall there was an interesting exhibit that utilized them in a wall sculpture. Better, I guess, than having them end up in the local landfill when my kids clean out my house after I die.
Then there are the photos. Now, many people carry them in their phones, but the only way you can share those is through email. We humans seem to need something tangible to hold – like photos. When Jesus said to sell what we have and give to the poor, I have to wonder if he realized that most of what we hold onto as part of our lives really has little monetary value. Well, now to look at that box in the attic.
Prayer for the Day
Was it easier, O Lord, when there was less stuff,
Fewer possessions that we hold onto?
How is it that we can be faithful to your bidding,
Sharing the overfill of our lives with others?
Grant us wisdom, O Holy One, to be truly discerning,
As we work to establish your kingdom on earth.
In the name of the One who bids us to do so,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
Possessions. The word is very potent – suggestive as it is of ownership both material and erotic. To possess. Possession. Possessed.
Hamish Bowles, British global editor of Vogue and The World of Interiors
One’s possessions carry a deep emotional and symbolic meaning.
Gad Saad, Canadian professor, from The Evolutionary Basis of Consumption
Jesus looked at him [the rich man] and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Sell all that you have and give to the poor and follow me.” And the man went away sad, because he had many possessions.
Mark 10: 30-31
