Questionng Approaches

In the midst of terror in Ukraine, Israeli assaults in Gaza, European Union Parliament elections, and scorching heat in the West, which will travel East, Peapack-Gladstone has put its geese on the front burner again.  The Town Council stated it had a contract to gas the geese and is not going to renege on its contact.

So after it spends almost $9,000 to gas the geese, will it have to do so again when a new flock of geese arrive, and you can bet your bottom dollar that a new flock will take over after the old flock is gassed.

More than 20 residents showed up at the Council meeting and opponents put together an on-line petition to urge the Council not to gas the geese.  In light of national  and world problems, this may seem like a small matter, but it says something about our approach to climate issues, because the geese are a harbinger just as much as the disappearance of frogs and toads.

Prayer for the Day

Holy One, we are in a time of confusion

     Too often we think our own resources are sufficient;

However, we are afraid not only of the changing world around us

      But of where our questions sometimes lead us.

The old answers no longer apply and we find ourselves adrift

     Like a ship without a rudder on a vast and open sea.

Help us, merciful One, to be open to the unexpected.

    In the name of the One who lived to bring us hope,

         Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.

            Albert Einstein, theoretical physicist (1879-1955)

Doubt is the middle position between knowledge and ignorance.  It encompasses cynicism but also genuine questioning.

            Vera Farmiga, American actress

For fear is nothing bt a giving up of the helps that come from reason;

   And hope, defeated by this inward weakness,

      Prefers weakness of what causes this torment.

            The Wisdom of Solomon 17:12-13
