It’s the week for Cop30, the annual environmental conference of the United Nations. The US won’t be there, of course, because the regime in Washington is too busy kissing up to big oil and coal owners who don’t care about their employees ding from black lung. But what would you expect from a presidential candidate who made it clear that for millions in contributions, he would do their bidding?
Palau, a small Pacific nation, cares about the impending climate catastrophe which will probably wipe it out. But will Washington powers care? Probably not since Paluans aren’t white. But the rising sea waters just don’t affect small island nations, but our own coastline as well. Look at the photos of North Carolina homes washed into the sea from a late fall storm or Newport, Rhode Island.
Hopeful when Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act included funds for “climate resilience planning,” Newport and other Northeast shore communities now face a hostile government to their problems. Maybe when the waters rise affecting to the barrier island that houses resorts near Palm Beach, someone will get the message.
Prayer for the Day
Maker and Sustainer, we thank you for the infinitude of life:
From the shells of tiny whelks to the whale in the sea;
But we, O God, have ignored how we are destroying so much.
For we have thought only of our own comfort, not the needs of others.
Move us, O Lord, so we act on what we see in front of us,
Framing our future if we do not commit ourselves to action.
In the name of the One who gives us guidance,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
It is no longer sufficient to merely invoke the need to save multilateralism,” she warns. “We must deliver on saving the planet and protecting the world’s most vulnerable. What is needed now is bold, accountable action that prioritises justice, equity and survival.
Meena Roman, Third World Network
So therefore we must turbocharge the transition away from fossil fuels. We must all lead by example. Climate change is litmus test for multilateralism.
Alexander Stubb, President of Finland at Cop30
The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it;
For God has founded it on the seas, and established it on the rivers.
Psalm 24: 1-2
