What with the world around us seeming to go awry – retaliation in the Middle East, the desperation in Ukraine, the threat of famine I Sudan, why focus on clean water in the United States?  Because safe drinking water is essential to our national health.

The regulations setting strict limits on PFAS compounds earlier this month set the stage for the announcement yesterday that added those “forever chemicals” to the superfund list, making the polluters responsible for the cleanup. What does that mean? At least 41,828 industrial and municipal sites have discharged these toxins into areas that pollute our groundwater.  The list is staggering.

We’ve too often thought of sin as only individual, but as the Hebrew pointed out, sin is also social, and not only by refusing to feed the poor. Too long we’ve allowed industry to pollute our water and the very air we breathe. If you just dump your trash on the street; you pay a penalty; industry should be subject to the same.

Prayer for the Day

The soft rain of the morning reminds us of your gift of water, O God,

   But we know there are many places where even the rain is toxic;

The air we breathe during the day reflects your gift of life, O Lord,

   But we know there are places where we must avoid the outside.

Bring us, O Holy One, to action where we care for your gifts of life,

   Cleaning air and water so all may live in your Spirit.

In the name of the One who touched the lilies,

   Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen

Thoughts for the Day

Only strong nationwide standards can ensure that every single American gets clean, safe drinking water free from PFAS forever chemicals that can endanger our health.

While researching my book on sustainable fashion, I was shocked to see how many chemicals are found in textiles, unbeknownst to the wearer. It’s not right that people are exposed to chemicals and are not even aware of it. Manufacturers need to do right by people’s health.

When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none,

    And their tongues are parched with thirst, I the Lord will answer them,

I will open the rivers on the bare heights, and the fountains in the midst of the valleys,

   I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry springs of water.
