It’s supposed to be a warmer day. Certainly the shock of the cold air in the early morning made us wonder if we had reverberated back to winter. The birds were pecking furiously at the suet, fluffing up their feathers before they got their turn. I looked for the robins, but they had the good sense to take shelter in thick bushes.
There was a funny political cartoon a few weeks ago of a polar bear sitting on a lump of ice talking to a seal as he looked at a climate change denier. “First I’m going to explain the difference between climate and weather and then I’m going to eat him.”
I could certainly understand the bear’s aggravation. We humans tend to look at the world around us from limited perspectives. It’s certainly time to accept uncomfortable truths whether it’s about climate change or historical fact. Unless we do so, we cannot make the changes needed for a livable and sustainable world.
Prayer for the Day
Companion of our lives, be ever with us for we falter,
New idols to worship overtake us and turn us from you;
Trapped by our desires, we forget to focus on grace
For we know that your mercy embraces us in our weakness.
Open us to your Spirit and help us to put away false idols.
In the name of him who came to show us how to live,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
The truth is rarely pure and never simple.
Oscar Wilde, English poet and dramatist (1844-1900)
The truth does not change according to our ability to stomach it.
Flannery O’Connor, American novelist (1925-1964)
Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar and all that fills it;
Let the field exult and everything that is in it.
Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord;
For God is coming to judge the earth. God will judge the earth with righteousness
And the peoples with God’s truth.
Psalm 96: 11-13
