Yesterday the Star Ledger had a political cartoon of Netanyahu stepping in holes of Israeli bombings in Gaza with one hole containing a World Central Kitchen truck, stating, “Oh, this one was a mistake.”  The so-called explanation given just doesn’t cut it. The bombing of the three trucks was deliberate.  More than 200 humanitarian aid workers feeding and caring for Gazan refugees have been deliberately murdered.

Using starvation as a weapon of war belies everything that Israel claims it has stood for. It is important to separate the policies of the Israeli government from the Jewish people, many of whom are appalled at what has been happening, not just in Gaza but also on the West Bank.

Neither anti-Semitism nor Islamophobia are answers to the conflicts in Palestine of the past almost 80 years. Both the Hamas attack on October 7 and the Israeli response go beyond the pale of civilized action, even in war, if it’s ever possible to consider war as civilized. We call this area the Holy Land.  What is transpiring is not holy.

Prayer for the Day

As Jesus wept over Jerusalem so many years ago,

   So do we weep over death and destruction in a crucible of faiths;

Torn apart by centuries of hate and mistrust between peoples,

   Anger and displacement have only created higher walls.

Turn us around, O God, and help us transform fear and hate,

   For only in sharing the land will peace begin to emerge.

In the name of the One who is the Prince of Peace,

   Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

For if life had taught her anything, it was that healing and peace can begin only with acknowledgment of wrongs committed.
      Susan Abulhawa, Palestinian American writer, from Mornings in Jenin

The continuation of this conflict in insane and totally futile, and there are ways to reach political agreements. Reconciliation and true peace will come later—the first step must be political agreements.

         Gershon Baskin, Israeli writer, from In Pursuit of Peace in Israel and Palestine

God shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples;

   They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks;

      Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

            Isaiah 2: 4
