The last few nights we have been treated to the sight of a beautiful full moon. The January full moon is known as the wolf moon. The name arose not just from the Native Americans but also from the colonial settlers with their European roots. There were wolves in the eastern colonies but those that were not killed were driven further west.

For as long as humans have worshipped deities of the moon, humans have also feared wolves. The old Russian fairy tale of Peter and the wolf is a good example told to teach a child not to wander. Wolves do continue to fascinate us, however.

We are still fascinated with the moon in spite of the knowledge we have from our scientific explorations. The film Moonstruck is a good example of how we link the moon and love, for example. The trip to the moon gave us a new picture of earth, one that shows in spite of seas between us we are all connected.

Prayer for the Day

In the stillness of the night, we see the moon you created.

Grant us your presence, O God, as we search for you,

For there are times the world smothers us with noise and distraction,

And we struggle to find peace in our souls.

Envelop us and sustain us as we look for you

To find sustenance in your love,

In the name of him who is your sustenance,

Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

A doctor once told me I feel too much. I said, so does God. that’s why you can see the Grand Canyon from the moon.

                                    - Andrea Gibson, American writer

Everyone is a moon and has a dark side never shown to anyone.

                                    - Mark Twain, American novelist (1835-1910)

O give thanks to the Lord for God’s steadfast love endures forever!

Who alone does great wonders, for God’s steadfast love endures forever.

Who spread out the earth upon the great waters,

For God’s steadfast love endures forever!

Who made the great lights, the sun to rule the day

For God’s steadfast love endures forever.

The moon and the stars to rule over the night,

For God’s steadfast love endures forever.
