More than twice the age of the young Oxford philosophy professor William MacAskill, the Senator from West Virginia has shown he lacks the moral clarity with which the younger one views the world. In his new book, What We Owe the Future, MacAskill writes we must think about the choices we make in our daily living and their impact on future generations.
He’s created an internet network called Effective Altruism to help people spend time and money wisely. The founders of our Nation wrote about their hopes for the future generations who would become the people and leaders of these United States.
With people like Manchin in power, it will take many Will MacAskill projects to counter the damage he has done and continues to inflict on our Nation and the world with his refusal to pass any meaningful climate legislation. If he really cared about the people he claims to represent, he would support aggressive climate policies and programs instead of holding them in servitude to the robber barons who pay for his Maserati.
Prayer for the Day
We cry out to you, O God, for faltering politicians
Who care more for comfort and profit than people;
We want to shout to the heavens, hoping for a thunderbolt
That will shake the leaders of our Nation into action.
Shake us loose from our complacency so we respond
To your command to shape a new world of justice.
In the name of the One who turned over the tables,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord.
Thoughts for the Day
Each generation takes the earth as trustees. We ought to bequeath to posterity as many forests and orchards as we have exhausted and consumed.
- Julius Sterling Morton, Nebraska journalist (1832-1902)
West Virginia ranks among the nation’s worst states when it comes to smoking, obesity, disabilities, and prescription-drug abuse; it trails much of the nation in the rate of college graduation.
- Evan Osnos, from “Chemical Valley,” The New Yorker
For the word of the Lord is upright, and all God’s work is done in faithfulness.
God loves the right and the just; the Lord’s kindness fills he earth.
By the word of the Lord the havens were made,
And by the breath of God’s mouth all their array.
Psalm 33: 4-6 (tr. Robert Alter)
