Although we knew it was coming, especially in light of the leaked draft, the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe still comes as a shock. In the states that respect the right of a woman to make what are clear morally wrenching decisions regarding abortion, women -- at least now – will have protection.
Most Americans do not remember a pre-Roe time. I do. I remember the older married woman who, pregnant for the eighth time, was told by her doctor she would endanger her own life if she did not terminate her pregnancy. And the young girl who did not realize she could become pregnant. Each had to make a difficult decision.
Abortion is a moral decision, make no bones about it. Reliance on the courts to protect certain fundamental rights has led to complacency. We have now entered a dark age that would bring women back to another century, not to mention destroying the ability of doctors to care for their patients. We should not ignore the words of the Justice who wants to roll back other protections, such contraception and same-sex marriage.
The language of the decision goes far beyond a woman’s right to make decisions for her own wellbeing. Look at the Court’s decisions on guns, the environment, and, most critically, voting rights. We can be complacent no more.
Prayer for the Day
Hearing cries of sorrow and triumph, O God, we worry for the future,
For our Nation is so divided among gender, class, and race;
Shouting in the pubic square solves little, O God, as we see
The continued repression of the poor and marginalized.
Grant, O Holy One, that we are able to encompass all
Into your promised realm of peace, justice, and mercy.
In the name of the One who calls us to action,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
Don’t waste your time mourning. Organize!
- Joe Hill, labor organizer, before he was executed by firing squad (1879-1915)
No woman can call herself free who does not control her own body.
Margaret Sanger, early contraceptive organizer (1879-1966)
The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.
And those who know your name put their trust in you,
For you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.
Psalm 9: 9-10
