There’s something about rainy Saturdays.  We tend to think of a Saturday as a day to get outdoors, possibly to work in the yard or as a day to go somewhere on a day trip.  But cool wet weather puts a real damper (ouch!) on all that.  Rainy Saturdays can be a good time to catch up with those little indoor tasks we have been putting off, or just the perfect time to read a book.

On a late spring rainy Saturday the world is lush and green even when it’s windy and unseasonably cool.  We then wonder, did we put away all our winter clothing when we thought it would be warm and sunny?

Rainy Saturdays force us to stop, to take a breather.  As we look out our windows, let us be thankful for God’s good gift – the rain – although we do always wonder why it seems to fall when we least want it.

Prayer for the Day

Even in the rain, the earth sings your praises, O God,

    We marvel at your glory in the heavens and the universe beyond;

Striving to be vessels of your grace and power,

    We know, in spite of our best efforts, we are imperfect;

Bring us to that place where we are more truly your servants

    Sharing the strength of community with the world.

 In the name of him who came to show us how to live,

     Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

Some people walk in the rain; others just get wet.

            Roger Miller, American songwriter (1936-1992)

All afternoon it rained, then

Such power came down from the clouds

On a yellow thread,

as authoritative as God is supposed to be.

            Mary Oliver, American poet from Rain (1935-2019)

Ask rain from the Lord in the season of spring rain,

   From the Lord who makes the storm clouds,

Who gives showers of rain to you, the vegetation in the field to everyone.

            Zechariah 10: 1
