After today the late afternoon will become darker but the mornings brighter.  After today we will feel the afternoon chill more even as the temperature moderates somewhat. After today we’ll be able to hear the winter birds as we get ready to start our days.

But there is more to after today:  the increased number of persons who have died from the virus that has seized us like a tight cord; the increasing frustration we feel at watching Congress continuing to dawdle; an overwhelmingly frightening feeling that nothing, nothing is going to change.

But most of us are aware that we will survive after today.  Most of us are convinced that death’s door will not open for us tomorrow, for that is the day after today.  Tomorrow we want to feel that there are real possibilities for change, even transformation, in our lives. So we stop – just for a minute – and think about after today.

Prayer for the Day

In response to your call we come, Spirit who embraces us,

     For your presence is a light in our lives;

We are humbled by your gifts to us beyond number

And speak our gratitude for all we have.

May we share your gifts with others often alone and bereft

As a measure of the gratitude we feel for all we have.

In the name of him who gave us gifts beyond measure,

Even Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen

Thoughts for the Day

Time is the father of truth; its mother is our mind.

Giordano Bruno, Renaissance thinker (1548-burned at the stake 1600)

Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood.  Now is the time to understand more so we may fear less.

Marie Curie, French physicist, Nobel Prize in physics and chemistry (1867-1934)

All wisdom is from the Lord, and with God it remains forever.

The sand of the sea, the drops of rain, and the days of eternity, who can count them?

The height of heaven, the breadth f the earth, the abyss, and wisdom  --

   Who can search them out?

Wisdom was created before all other things, and understanding from eternity.

The root of wisdom – to whom has it been revealed?

Her subtleties – who knows them? There is but one who is wise, greatly to be feared,

The Lord seated on the throne of heaven. It is the Lord who created her.

            Sirach 1: 4-9
