Science in the Crosshairs

We all know that older people are more susceptible to disease but the question is why.  Ruth Montgomery, a Yale professor in the Schools of Medicine and Public Health, says that worldwide the population is getting older so it’s important to know why.

Our innate immune system consists of white blood cells, 75% of which are neutrophils, born every day, living for about 24 hours. They respond to stimuli differently depending on whether the person is older or younger.  In older people, the neutrophils can react in such a way that the response is not as regulate as it is in younger people.

As we look at Dave Weldon, physician and former Florida Congressman, as the new appointment for the CDC, we should hope that he will support good scientific research. The NIH selection is yet to be made. Our nation’s health stands in the crosshairs.

Prayer for the Day

Aging isn’t what it used to be, O God, as we live longer,

   But we wonder if we live better as your servants;

Caring for those around us, physicians and scientists,

Work to eliminate the effects of disease and illness.

May we as a Nation continue to support their work,

As they continue to buttress our physical and mental health.

In the name of the One who healed the sick,

Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

At a time when science plays such a powerful role in society, when the destiny of the whole of mankind may hinge on the results of scientific research, it is incumbent upon all scientists to be fully conscious of that role, and to act accordingly.

If you got a very conservative Republican in power, they may not be happy about some of the scientific research going on, because it conflicts with their fundamental beliefs.

Jocelyn Bell Burnell, astrophysicist, discovered radio pulsars

Wisdom is radiant and unfading, and is easily discerned by those who love her,

And is found by those who seek her.

Hastening to make herself known to those who desire her.

One who rises early to seek her will have no difficulty,

For she will be found sitting at the gate.

To fix one’s thoughts on her is perfect understanding,

And one who is vigilant on her account will soon be free from care.
