Yesterday I officiated at a wedding of two women, one an investment counselor, the other a manager at a regional bank. Together for almost twelve years, they had talked about marriage from time to time, but felt that they had to make their union legal out of fear that the new regime would be able to do harm to them if not legally married.
What if the man who would be king decided that the IRS would not treat them as a married couple, or if large corporations could no longer offer marital benefits? What if the new right got the Supreme Court to reverse the Obergefell decision? The “what if” questions lurked on what should have been a totally joyous occasion.
It’s Gay Pride month, but large corporations, more worried about their bottom line than a true commitment to equal rights, that had supported events and marches in the past have pulled back in the face of hate from the radical right. What happens next?
Prayer for the Day
So vast, infinite, and beautiful is your creation, O God,
But some would deny including certain people within it;
Along with all creatures, you made us as the stars in the heavens,
But there are those who want to narrow their beauty.
May we, O Holy One, celebrate life in all its varieties,
As reflections of your own infinitude and beauty.
In the name of the One who embraces all,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
Do not allow people to dim your shine because they are blinded. Tell them to put on some sunglasses because we were born this way.
Lady Gaga
How can people change their minds about us if they don’t know who we are?
Harvey Milk, assassinated because he was gay (1930-1978)
Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one’s definition of your life; define yourself.
Harvey Fierstein, American actor, writer
With the Lord on my side I do not fear. What can mortals do to me?
The Lord is on my side to help me; I shall look in triumph on those who hate me.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to put confidence in mortals.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to put confidence in princes.
Psalm 118: 7-9
