Even though we have a beautiful cool morning, our gardens are longing for rainy days. The rain that was originally forecast for Monday and Tuesday now shifts over to next weekend. Not longing for rainy days are state pension funds which are consistently underfunded. Although $91.5 billion sounds like a lot, we still owe our state workers their retirement just as we want ours.
Where that money is invested is important. Right now there’s a bill in the legislature to divest from fossil fuels and use other means of investments. Although the state has adopted an “economic, social, and governance,” or ESG, policy on new investments, it still hasn’t shifted much state monies into renewables, that would spur their growth.
Other states like Connecticut struggle with the issue that Massachusetts has resolved. Where our money goes is important because pension investments come from our taxes. We should be putting our money where our mouth is. Isn’t that what we are called to do as Christians?
Prayer for the Day
Walking in the cool summer morning, we feel life around us,
And although we like warm sunny days, we know we need rain;
But so often we want to rain to come tomorrow or the next day
Even as the ground is parched and dry.
Hold us in moments of your grace, O God, as we strive
To be faithful witnesses in our daily lives.
In the name of the One who shows us how to be faithful,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
It is our tax dollars, our health and safety and our futures that are on the line here … Fossil fuels are literally killing us.
- Tina Weishaus, Chair, Divest NJ coalition
We’re talking about the end of the human race as we know it … This is existential in the classic sense of the word.
- Bob Smith, State Senator 17th District, Professor Environmental Science (ret)
The Lord is just in all ways and kind in all doings.
The Lord is near to all who call on God and to all who call on God in truth.
The Lord fulfills the desire of all who fear the Lord;
And hears their cry, and saves them.
Psalm 145: 17-19
