It would be an understatement to say that peace is elusive; in fact, it almost seems nonexistent in today’s world.  There is the terrible war in Ukraine, ethnic conflicts that boil over into violence in Africa, and here at home, things aren’t much better.

Purveyors of hate fill the air waves and internet, taking advantage of tragedy to foment conflict and violence.  Following the murder of a14-year old girl in Fargo, North Dakota, by a schizophrenic Liberian immigrant, Peter Tefft, known for his “Jews will not replace us” cry in the 2017 Charlottesville Neo-Nazi parade, has latched onto the murder as a sign of Liberians being brought in to replace whites.

Finding peace in Fargo means we must work to create peace there and in the rest of our Nation.  Peace doesn’t just happen.  It takes a commitment to create peace. The prophet Isaiah laid down the requirements for peace: justice and equity for the poor and dispossessed.  Then shall the foundations for peace be laid.

Prayer for the Day

The words of the prophet spring to our minds as we pray for peace,
     But we know, O God, that peace requires more than words;
We strive for peace, especially in a holiday season,
    But we know, O lord, that peace must be sought yer round.
Bestow on us more than fleeting wishes, but a commitment,
    To create peace between us and others in our communities.
In the name of the One who calls us to live in peace,
    Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.
     - Jimi Hendrix, musician, guitarist, songwriter (1942-1970)

Reconciliation should be accompanied by justice; otherwise it will not last.  While we all hope for peace, it shouldn't be peace at any cost, but peace based on principle, on justice.
     - Corazon Aquino, Filipino President (1933-2009)

A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow from his roots.
    The spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding,
        The spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear o the lord.
He shall not judge by what his eyes see or decide by what his ears hear;
   But with righteousness he shall judge the poor,
       And decide with equity for the meek of the earth.
    Isaiah 11: 1-4a
