Why is it that we have cloudy, possibly rainy, days on the weekend while the weekday mornings are so stunningly beautiful? I usually comment that a rainy weekend is God’s way of telling me to clean my house – or at least pay attention to certain things that need to get done – but who wants to pay attention to a messy desk when a morning full of sunshine beckons?

Of course, the Sunday commute to the church won’t be as busy as it is on a sunny Sunday.  That’s a benefit, I tell myself.  And there’s the opportunity to go through all the papers and pitches for this, that, and the other.  And then there’s the book I need to have but is probably buried under a pile of papers and magazines.

My nightshirt reads:  So many books, so little time.  It’s true.  Deciding what is really important to read is difficult. It’s the books, the articles that makes you think and brings you in touch with who you really are that are most important.  As one writer noted, the world is made up of thought and it’s thought that creates our reality.

Prayer for the Day

Spirit of life, may your Presence come into our lives,
Holding us in your embrace although we cannot see you.
Consumed by daily pursuits we find it difficult to move beyond the tangible,
And our frantic self-centeredness wastes our spirit and our strength.
Awaken us, O Lord, to the reality of your Spirit,
Rousing us from our complacency accepting things as they are.
In the name of the One who embodies your Spirit,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen

Thoughts for the Day

A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge.
      - George R.R. Martin, American novelist

Let’s be reasonable and add an eighth day to the week that is devoted exclusively to reading.
      - Lena Dunham, American writer

O that my words were written down! O that they were inscribed in a book!
O that with an iron pen and with led they were engraved on a rock forever.
    Job 19: 23-24
