As the weather gets cooler we start to think more about indoor activities rather than outdoor ones.  And we begin to think about food, all kinds of food, including what are called comfort foods. High in carb, sugar, and fatty acids, most are actually not very good for us.  In fact, most are included as a major cause of our deteriorating health.

But there are ways to have good comfort foods; they just need to be made from scratch.  Making good food from scratch has its own separate rewards, at least for me.  There is the fragrance of spices and herbs in the kitchen, the wonderful smell of baking muffins, and then, of course, the feeling that you know what’s in what you are eating.

Most of us have neither the time nor the inclination to take hours baking a loaf of bread. Thinking about food makes me realize how many people have little or no access to good food that is not heavily laden with unpronounceable ingredients. Having safe food should be a national priority because food heavily laden with chemicals will just make people ill and obese.

Prayer for the Day

You have created us, O gracious God, in your image,
     The image of love and concern for the world around us;
You have endowed us, O Source of being, with soul and mind,
      The soul and mind to consider all that is around us in our world;
Energize us, as we continue on our journey to answer your call
     By serving the many who need our help and assistance,
In the name of the One who reached out to those in need,
    Even Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.
     - Hippocrates, doctor, author of more than 70 books (460-370 BCE)

I was 32 when I started cooking.  Up to then I just ate.
       - Julia Child, cook extraordinaire (1912-2004)

Ho, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters;
   And you that have no money, come, buy and eat!
Come buy wine and milk, without money and without price.
   Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
And your labor for that which does not satisfy?
   Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good,
     And delight yourself in rich ood.
         Isaiah 55: 1-2
