The robin in my yard yesterday morning looked confused. Friday night’s temperature was not a good one for robins – or for my cats which scurried inside to find a warm place on my bed. I wanted to tell the robin that it needed to get moving and head south where it would be safe from the frigid night.

Well, to be truthful, it’s not quite frigid; it just seems that way because the temperature change was so abrupt. The bird food store suggested mealworms and suet to give the birds energy for their migration south. And the temperature has moved us from light salads to something more substantial.

The sun, the glorious sun, reminding us of the warmth of God’s love warms the day and embraces us into its warmth, almost to the point when we do not feel the oncoming chill until the sunset.

Prayer for the Day

Let all the earth bless God, Creator, and Sustainer of life.

Let all that grows from the earth, forest, and plain, give praise.

Let the rivers and springs and all who dwell therein, sing to God.

Let the sound of the dolphins and the leviathan resonate with song.

Let the bellow of frogs and toads join in their praise.

Let all peoples of the earth praise God by sustaining the creation.

In the name of him who gives us life in God,

Even Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

Nature is painting for us, day by day, Pictures of infinite beauty.

John Ruskin, British art critic (1819–1900)

Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life shall last.

Rachel Carson, American biologist/writer (1907–1964)

Make a joyful noise to God, all the earth;

sing the glory of God’s name!

     give to God glorious praise.

Say to God, How awesome are your deeds!

Psalm 66:1–3a
