The Destructiveness of Conspiracy Theories

Remember Infowars?  That dreadful website hosted by Alex Joes, who claimed that the Sandy Hook massacre never occurred because it was a fabrication to take “our” guns away from us?  This led to parents of dead children being besieged in their homes by so-called “gun rights” advocates.  In spite of the judgment against him, he’s at it again.

This time the conspiracy theorist is claiming that Hurricanes Helene and Milton were “weather weapons” unleashed by the federal government. Replete with doctored photos of a tornado that occurred months ago, he asked, “What is Happening to Florida?”  Not satisfied with this outrageous garbage, he has now made FEMA workers the object of death threats.  What is wrong with this man and with the people who believe him?

He’s not the only one, of course.  There’s Marjorie Taylor Greene who after stating that pasteurized milk was a way for the government to sneak Covid vaccines into people, got a bunch of people in Utah to drink unpasteurized milk which put them into the hospital.  Even more than asking why people would come up with such nonsense, we should ask why such charlatans are believed, even those elected to Congress.

Prayer for the Day

Fearful of what we may discover about ourselves,

   We are reluctant to enter the winter of our souls;

Protect us from the silence of soul and the despair of doubt.

Exhibited in our weakness of will and languidness of heart.

Enable us to find truth in the midst of falsehood,

And in your mercy, O God, hold us fast to what we say.

In the name of the One who is our Guide,

Even Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

I’m trying to rescue my community. I ain’t got time. I ain’t got time to chase down every Facebook rumor … We’ve been through enough.

Asst. Fire Chief Bradley Boone, Pensacola, North Carolina

If it [anti-FEMA posts] creates so much fear that my staff doesn’t want to go out in the field, then we’re not going to be in a position where we can help people.

            FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell

Why do the nations conspire, and the peoples plot in vain?

The kings of the earth set themselves and the rulers take counsel together.

Against the Lord and the Lord’s anointed, saying

“Let us burst their bonds asunder and cast their cords from us.”

            Psalm 2: 1-3
