Less than one year after British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain waved a piece of paper stating that he had secured “peace for our time,” Hitler’s Panzer divisions rolled across Poland towards Warsaw. The proposal to let Putin take more territory than he has actually secured and reducing the size of the Ukrainian army by half is nothing more than another Munich agreement.
If one looks into Putin’s “soul,” assuming he has one, one will see a smiling dictator who has little more than ambitions to restore the former Soviet Union, the collapse of which Putin has called a tragedy. What kind of peace is this?
Capitulating to a butcher doesn’t save Europe or us. Just as history showed that Hitler was willing to sacrifice German troops as he invaded country after country, Putin is cut from the same cloth. Estimates say about a million on Putin’s side have died. In this so-called peace deal with “security guarantees,” we face another Hitler.
Prayer for the Day
Searching for truths you would impart to us, O Holy One,
We place our minds and hearts before you in this time;
Seeking to discern the meaning of your Word for our lives
We come full of questions and trepidation for the world.
Open our minds to your spirit that informs us of our responsibility
So we are able to make wise decisions with courage.
In the name of the One who is our guide,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
The least-bad scenario is that Ukraine cedes territory while gaining meaningful means to repel a future attack. The best, and most likely, scenario is that Ukraine successfully sets out its terms — and Russia balks. Then there will be fewer illusions in the Trump administration about what they are really dealing with.
Damir Marusic, The Washington Post, formerly with the Atlantic Council
If Ukraine accepts this, there will be no Ukraine anymore. If Europe accepts this, we must prepare for a direct war with Russia.
Marko Mihkelson, Estonian Parliament Foreign Affairs Chair
The wicked have laid a snare for me, but I do not stray from your precepts
