Some recent reports have raised the specter of lost jobs due to new AI technology but one report put out by the Economic Policy Institute posits that the real issue in job loss or wage suppression isn’t technology but the desire of employers to maintain power.

Some anti-AI fears hearken back to the Luddites who in 1779 destroyed mechanized weaving looms that threatened their craft. The same kind of fear has many labor unions and workers concerned about their future. Although technological changes have caused some displacement, the EPI report states the real problem is an imbalance of power.

Which brings us back to the question of how we should function as a democracy. Our society reflects the imbalance caused by the power of wealth, resulting in a breakdown of social trust, a foundation stone of a democracy.  Rebuilding social trust is essential to ending the deep divisiveness which corrupt politicians utilize to maintain their power.

Prayer for the Day

Broken apart by anger arising from mistrust, O God,

   We ask your guidance and wisdom to help us heal;

Discomfited by our inability to find common ground,

   We pray for ways to repair the holes in our compact with each other.

Restore to us a sense of common purpose and trust,

   So we are able to care for each other as we should.

In the name of the One who is our guide,

   Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

A nation will not survive when so few have so much and so many have so little.

Material progress does not merely fail to relieve poverty, it actually produces it. This association of progress with poverty is the great enigma of our times. It is the riddle that the sphinx of fate puts to our civilization. And which NOT to answer is to be destroyed.

            Henry George, American economist, from Progress and Poverty (1839-1897)

The righteous know the rights of the poor; the wicked have no such understanding.
