In this week when so many have witnessed death and destruction, there is actually at least one piece of good news to emerge:  Reversing the previous administration, Biden has followed the EPA’s recommendation to ban chlorpyrifos on food, a pesticide linked to neurodevelopmental problems in children.

This ban will protect the farmworkers who had been spraying it on fruits and vegetables, not to mention the unborn children of pregnant farm workers. Inhaling or ingesting it on food can lead to blurred vision and headaches.  The American Farm Bureau, composed of owners – not workers – objected.  What’s a farmworker or two, anyhow?

It can still be used on cotton and golf courses.  So golfers beware when you pick up that little ball off the green. Don’t breathe until you’re standing up and ready to swing the club again. Maybe the most important message is to think organic: cotton, fruits, vegetables and to know the source of your food.

Prayer for the Day

In humility we come to you, Lord God, to seek your face,

For yours is a face of compassion and understanding.

In hope we call on you, Gracious One, to find your calming strength,

For your heart embraces us into your being and grants us your peace.

Grace us with your Presence, cradle us in your arms,

Bestow on us your wisdom and your strength

In the name of the One who cared for all,

Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

History will judge societies and governments — and their institutions — not by how big they are or how well they serve the rich and the powerful, but by how effectively they respond to the needs of the poor and the helpless.

Cesar Chavez, organizer for farmworkers (1927-1993)

Every moment is an organizing opportunity, every person a potential activist, every minute a chance to change the world.

Dolores Huerta, organizer for farmworkers (b. 1930)

We give thanks to you, O God; we give you thanks; your name is near.

People tell of your wondrous deeds.

At the set time that I appoint, I will judge with equity,

When the earth totters, with all its inhabitants, it is I who keeps its pillars steady.

            Psalm 75: 1-3
