At times we’re never sure whether to be more concerned with the problems of hate close to home or far away.  Although we may feel encircled by hateful actions here in the United States, at least we can exercise some measure of control.  Concern about hateful actions abroad often leave us with feelings of helplessness or the inability to change things.  But we cannot avert our eyes to such actions abroad.

In Jaranwala, Pakistan, a city of about 150,000, two weeks ago, a small community of Christians was attacked by an organized mob of Muslims, urged on by local imams based on a rumor of blasphemy by a local Christian. Mobs burned and ransacked churches and houses while local police stood by.

Pakistan is one of those countries where uneducated people are easily manipulated for political purposes. It also enjoys a favored trading status with the European Union and EU threats to end that status has brought some measure of response from authorities. However, the real issue are the blasphemy laws which have resulted in the murders of Parliament members as well as individual Christians.

Prayer for the Day

Often turning away from the world around us,
    We seek to isolate ourselves from others who call upon us;
More concerned with our problems at home,
   We have not opened ourselves to your Spirit.
Compassionate Heart, transform us into a community of caring,
   Letting love triumph over fear and hopelessness.
In the name of him who shared your love with all,
     Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

So when you spot violence or bigotry, intolerance or fear, or just garden variety misogyny, hatred or ignorance, just look it in the eye and think: “The good outnumber you and always will.”
     - Patton Oswalt, American stand-up comedian

Intolerance shows a lack of faith in one’s cause.
     - Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948)

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.
