More than a thousand years before Jesus of Nazareth walked this earth, seedlings of the mighty Sequoia trees were taking root. Having survived wildfires, they now face a new challenge:  the desire of companies to destroy them through logging. Although the Forest Service states that many, but not all, of the trees designated or destruction have been fire victims, those Sequoias are important in the ecosystem.

The Forest Service claims that logging is necessary for seedlings, but the machinery involved would kill many naturally regenerating seedlings in the forest. Dead trees serve as homes for many birds and the Pacific fisher, a small mammal of the weasel family.   Why destroy natural regeneration so “land managers” can replant seedlings?

Following devastating wildfires in 2021, the “Save our Sequoias” Act was proposed, but it permits harvesting of Sequoia lumber. Industry groups, of course, like this idea; sequoia lumber is very, very profitable. Over 80 environmental groups oppose the bill and have sued the Forrest Service since their proposal would permit the skirting of current environmental protections for the Sequoias.

Prayer for the Day

We say we marvel in your creation, O Source of all life;

  We say that we are amazed in the miracle of life all around us,

But our actions belie our words as we destroy much of the earth,

   For, in truth, we look to the earth only for what it can give us.

Your creation is more than what we take of your precious resources;

   Help us to see that all life is connected through your hand,

In the name of the One who calls us to your life,

    Even Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

Our primary objections to Section 6(a)(2), which would waive environmental laws under a broad so-called “emergency.” …The legislation would prevent the voices of scientists, community members, and others from being heard [by removing the Sequoias from the right to comment on proposals].

            From the letter of 80 environmental organizations to Congress

The proposed logging projects would trample and remove the very sequoia trees, wildlife, and other resources that the [Giant Sequoia National] monument was designed to protect.
