Earlier this week I raised the question about the dangers of religious extremism and the violence it engenders. Recognizing that writers, artists and activists worldwide often face persecution, Yale has expanded its Scholars at Risk program, which offers such persons a place to do their work free from dangers they face in their home countries.
Although temporary, these appointments offer scholars “time to find their footing and explore new opportunities” to continue their work. As a nation, we have welcomed writers, scholars, and scientists in the past who were fleeing persecution based on either their work or ethnicity. This is a tradition that enhances our moral strength as a place of free and open thought an expression.
The SAR program, as it is called, includes all branches of Yale, including the Divinity School where a religious scholar from Myanmar is teaching a course on religion and conflict and reconciliation in Southeast Asia. Jesus was never afraid to ask questions no matter where the answers would lead him. Neither should we be as well.
Prayer for the Day
In an age and at a time when we are told to fear the new, O God,
We know the fearmongers do little more than limit our scope;
You have given us minds to think and ask questions,
To expand the boundaries of our vision without fear.
Be with us, O Lord, as we explore new horizons,
And to conquer our trepidations and concerns.
In the name of the One who always asked questions,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
The most important aspect of academic freedom is freedom to learn. All education is a continuous dialog – questions and answers that pursue every problem on the horizon.
- William O. Douglas, U.S. Supreme Court Justice (1898-1980)
If freedom of speech is taken away, then dumb and silent we may be led like sheep to the slaughter.
- George Washington (1732-1799)
Listen therefore, O kings, and understand; learn, O judges of the ends of the earth.
Give ear, you that rule over multitudes, and boast of many nations.
For your dominion was given you from the Lord,
And your sovereignty from the Most High;
God will search out your works and inquire into your plans.
Wisdom of Solomon 6: 1-3
