In the midst of the stories of Omicron rampage, increased hospitalizations, and political infighting, a story of sheer delight comes to our attention, something we can honestly celebrate.  The Standardbred Retirement Foundation is such a story, dedicating itself to saving retired thoroughbred race horses from slaughter.

Located in Cream Ridge, part of Upper Freehold Township, older retired horses run in pastures and are cared for while they are put up for adoption.  We often think of feral cats or abandoned dogs, but few of us realize that horses are also shoved off once they have lost their earning power.

Like dogs and cats, horses form deep bonds with human beings. Sensitive creatures, they recognize when a person cares for them. In a time when people always seem so angry about something, usually nothing in particular, it is reassuring to read about persons who care for horses beyond the financial gain they can receive from them.

Prayer for the Day

Eternal Creator, you have made us stewards of the earth,
   Bestowing upon us the duty of care for your creation;
Through the creatures of earth, sky, and sea, Bountiful One,
   We learn to appreciate your infinitude and power.
Grant, O Lord, that we show the same mercy and care
   To the creatures of the world that you have shown to us.
In the name of the One who told us to consider the sparrow,
   Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
