What is it about Congress that breeds such cowards? The great gun bill of 2022 will “enhance” background checks for gun buyers 18-21, close the “boyfriend” loophole in domestic violence matters, fund school safety and mental health programs, and set up grants for states to pass “red flag” laws. Oh, boy! That’s really going to take care of America’s flood of AR15s, ghost guns, and high capacity pistols.
Yesterday Ryan Busse, a former gun industry insider, testified before Congress about the dreadful change he has seen in gun purchasing ads. A recent gun show had a poster of a Revolutionary War solider firing an AR-15 with the caption: “Gear for your daily gunfight” Daily gunfight?
And that’s just the beginning. A photo of a white man in a Hawaiian shirt, the worn by the Bugaloo Boys, a domestic terror organization gearing up for a “race war.” So-called courageous Congressmen like Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz don’t think they have cause to worry – except when running away from AR-15 packing mobs attacking Congress.
Prayer for the Day
Like the Psalmist, we cry to you, O God, for wisdom and courage
So lacking in so many who pass laws in this Nation;
Like the Psalmist, we ask, how long will such madness endure
While daily our children are murdered by a flood of guns.
Bring wisdom and courage to those who sit in Congress
And enable them to refuse money from the gun lobby.
In the name of the One who calls us to peace,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
Since Texas law has worked so well for so long in allowing 18-year-olds to buy rifles, now even ones designed for war, is there any need to keep people that age from buying a howitzer? They, of course, still would not be able to buy a beer.
- Jack Colwell, columnist in the South Bend (Iowa) Tribune
We lose eight children and teenagers to gun violence every day. If a mysterious virus suddenly started killing eight of our children every day, America would mobilize teams of doctors and public health officials. We would move heaven and earth until we found a way to protect our children. But not with gun violence.
- Elizabeth Warren, U.S. Senator, Massachusetts
Answer me when I call, O God of my right! You gave me room when I was in distress.
Be gracious to me, and hear my prayer.
