Weather.  The forecaster said that today would be cloudy with possible showers, but at this time there are peeks of sun glowing across the street. It’s windy, no, actually breezy would be a better word, and the cool breeze is soothing.  Breezes, however, are not what people in South Dakota and Iowa experienced yesterday.

It’s called a derecho, which is the Spanish word for right, as in direction. It’s a violent windstorm, which yesterday turned the sky green because of how the light particles interact with the sunlight.  The flat lands contribute to the power of the windstorm.

We need rain, not like the violent storms we have with a hurricane, but a soft, gentle rain that lasts a full day or night. The ground is hard and packed. As the climate warms, we seem to have fewer such rains. Not good for our future.  I wonder if the climate gurus on the Supreme Court think about the future of their children as they made that West Virginia coal decision or, like the know-nothings for a former time, just think God will take care of it all.

Prayer for the Day

Like peoples of former times, we pray for rain, O God,
   So that there are sufficient crops for all to have;
But unlike peoples of former times, we have science
    That tells us how we impact the climate, the weather.
Let us not shrug off the way we live influences the change we fear,
    But let us strive to care for the earth in ways large and small.
In the name of the One who walked among wheat fields,
    Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

Those [older weather] models are going to be inadequate to deal with a new climate.
      - Jeff Masters, founder Weather Underground

There will always be those who say it's too difficult. There will be those who say we are too small, and that pollution and climate change are the price of progress. They are wrong.
      - Jacinda Arden, Prime Minister of New Zealand

Let me hear what God the Lord will speak, for God will speak peace to the people,
  To the faithful, to those who turn to God in their hearts.
Surely God’s salvation is at hand for those who fear the Lord, that God’s glory dwell.
   Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet;
       Righteousness and peace will kiss each other.
    Psalm 85: 8-9
