We hear scientists talk about the difference of 2 degrees Fahrenheit or 1.5 degrees Celsius and it doesn’t sound like that much of a difference.  Do we feel the difference between 91 and 93, for example? In the short term, probably not, but in the long term, what seems like an insignificant number is actually pretty consequential.

That thunderstorm we had Tuesday night cooled things off for a few hours, but as soon as the sun came over the trees, it was hot again, really hot. Climate scientists tell us that at an increase of 1.5 Celsius only 14 percent will have extreme heat waves but at 2 degrees the number jumps to 37 percent.

As a result, we will have more vanishing lakes, shrinking rivers, and coastal flooding until we call a halt to the greed and profit driven industries that have controlled our public square. This is the defining issue for our generation, for if we continue half-hearted measures, the future will look back at us and wonder why we did not act.

Prayer for the Day

We want the earth bless you, God, but it cries for mercy.

   For all that grows from the earth, forest and plain, need saving;

We want the oceans to sing to you, O God, but they are silent,

For the sound of dolphins and the leviathan cannot be heard.

Hearken us, O Lord, with the bellow of frogs and toads

Alerting us to the need to sustain your creation.

In the name of him who gives us life in God,

Even Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

If you really think that the environment is less important than the economy, try holding your breath while you count your money.

Guy McPherson, American scientist, professor of environmental biology

I want you to act as if the house is on fire, because it is.

            Greta Thunberg. Environmental activist

O Lord, you God of vengeance, you God of vengeance, shine forth!

Rise up, O judge of the earth; give to the proud what they deserve!

O Lord, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked exult?

They pour out their arrogant words; all the evildoers boast.

They crush your people, O Lord, and afflict your heritage.

            Psalm 94: 1-5
