Rocks and water, well, really, specs of an asteroid that contained a drop of water, could, say a team of Japanese scientists, provide clues to the origin of life on earth. Not life, generally, but life on earth, for out there, swirling about, are probably billions, if not more, asteroids, suns, planets, and stars.

We are told that “In the beginning,” whenever that was, “when God created the heavens and the earth,” the discovery of water and organic matter in specs of an asteroid should cause us to appreciate even more the wonder of the universes that exist. We have but a small glimpse of the beauty of the heavens from the Hubble and Webb telescopes.

Those images put our lives in some perspective, for who or what are we except sentient beings created in the image of God?  Relating those images to our planet Earth, calls us to care even more for this gift which took millions, if not billions of years to develop and grow into what we have now.

Prayer for the Day

Swirling from the dust of universes in space, O God,
    We stand now as the beneficiaries of your creation;
Out of the void and darkness, you gave us light, O Lord,
So we may see the beauty and wonder of the earth.
Grant, O Creator, that we act as sentient beings formed in your image,
Caring for the earth and all its inhabitants.
In the name of the One who points the way,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

While I know myself as a creation of God, I am also obligated to realize and remember that everyone else and everything else are also God’s creation.
     - Maya Angelou, American poet (1928-2014)

God writes the Gospel, not in the Bible alone, but also on trees, and in the flowers, and clouds and stars.
     - Martin Luther, theologian (1483-1546)

In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth,
The earth was as a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep,
While a wind swept over the face of the waters.
Then God said, “Let there be light” and there was light.
And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness
And God called the light day and the darkness God called night.
       Genesis 1: 1-4
