Just when I thought it was safe to support an important issue, such as preserving the environment, some states such as Oklahoma and Louisiana are now passing legislation prohibiting their state governments from doing business with financial firms that “discriminate” against fossil fuel companies. Claiming it’s about drivers of state economies, it’s sad when states become fossilized in their thinking.
Between droughts and hurricanes, those states suffer disproportionately from climate change. This kind of thinking unfortunately will not just hurt those states but the rest of the country as we already are in the beginning of a very active hurricane season due in large part to warming oceans.
One wonders if it is possible to do anything or support any issue without it becoming part of the culture wars. How can we move ahead as a society when we become so polarized over even the simplest issue? It seems that almost any question or issue we face as a society divides us into opposing camps and chasms apart.
Prayer for the Day
Reveal yourself to us, Eternal Spirit, giving us a vision of the future;
Be visible to us tangibly as we are visible to one another;
Open our eyes so we recognize you in the faces of those among us
Whether they be here in our community or in the world beyond.
Open our minds to new possibilities as we encounter one another,
Making your Presence visible to us as we make it visible to others.
In the name of the One who shows us your Presence,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
We all need to work together because there are no jobs on a dead planet … no social justice without a shift in governance and ambition, and ultimately no peace for peoples of the world without the guarantee of sustainability.
- Sharan Burrow, International Trade Confederation
The best way to predict the future is to create it.
- Peter Drucker, writer on management (1909-2005)
When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none,
And their tongue is parched with thirst, I the Lord will answer them.
I the God of Israel will not forsake them.
I will open rivers on the bare heights, and fountains in the midst of the valleys;
I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry lands springs of water.
Isaiah 41: 17-18
