Yesterday turned out to be such a lovely day but as I pulled into the driveway, NPR had the story of Miah Cerrillo who smeared blood of a dead classmate all over herself and played dead in the Uvalde school massacre.  Those brave police officers didn’t try to enter because, as one of them said, they were afraid of getting shot.

The day before Garnett Whitfield, son of the oldest person killed in the Buffalo massacre the week before had to listen to that great Texan Ted Cruz begin to lecture him that the real problem was black people with guns killing white people. Cruz was the noble Texas Senator who went to Cancun while people died in a terrible freeze in his home state.

Then there’s the Texas ghost gun company in Federal Court to enjoin the new Biden regulation banning unmarked and untraceable guns crying that the rule will destroy his business.  My heart is breaking for him. How does he sleep at night?  Just as there are limits on what one can say or do under the First Amendment, there are limitations under the Second.

Prayer for the Day

With the Psalmist, we cry, “How long, O God? How long?”
How long will money make cowards of our elected representatives?
With the psalmist, we cry, “Deliver us, O Lord, from the unjust!”
But we know the only way is to throw them out of office.
We beseech you, God of justice, to arm us with courage,
So we may deliver ourselves from the corrupt and greedy.
In the name of the One who overturned the tables of corruption,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

Great occasions do not make heroes or cowards; they simply unveil them to the eyes of men. Silently and perceptibly, as we wake or sleep, we grow strong or weak; and last some crisis shows what we have become.”
     - Brooke Foss Westcott, English bishop, theologian (1825-1901)

Moral cowardice that keeps us from speaking our minds is just as dangerous as irresponsible talk.
      - Margaret Chase Smith, U.S. Senator, Maine (1897-1995)

So what does it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life?  What will they give in return for that life?
    Matthew 16: 26
