Continuing our walk to Jerusalem, the late March weather must have been warmer than it is this morning. It really felt more like spring last week than today, with early morning temperatures below freezing. I wonder how the robins are doing with this cold snap. At this time of year, Jesus and his followers must have seen lots of birds. About 150 bird species visit Palestine at this time of year as part of the migration from Africa to Europe.
Clearly there were doves and pigeons, because the poor bought them for sacrifice. But along the way, the sounds of different varieties must have brought music to Jesus’ ears. Today, those birds are threatened by habitat loss as are many species throughout the world. The one thing you don’t see in photos of Gaza are birds.
Noticing what is around us when we walk is one of the pleasures of walking, to be sure. At this time of morning, now with a sunrise to happen, most birds aren’t quite up yet, but the chirping will start soon. I notice it becomes more intense as I head toward the feeders with a container of seed.
Prayer for the Day
Walking with Jesus, we notice the world around us,
The birds, an occasional fox, and certainly the cold;
But you, O God, put the warmth of love in our hearts,
As we try to follow the One who is our teacher.
Bring us into a deeper appreciation of your world, O God,
So we not only care for the earth but protect it as well.
In the name of the One who is our teacher,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
A leaf fluttered in through the window this morning, as if supported by the rays of the sun, a bird settled on the ire escape, joy in the task of coffee, joy accompanied me as I walked.
Anais Nin, writer (1903-1977)
Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken winged bird that cannot fly.
Langston Hughes, poet (1901-1967)
You make springs gush forth in the valleys; they flow between the hills,
Giving drink to every wild animal; the wild asses quench their thirst;
By the streams the birds of the air have their habitation;
They sing among the branches.
From your lofty abode you water the mountains;
The earth is satisfied with the fruit of your work
Psalm 104: 10-13
