The current bro-ha-ha over the deaths of eight humpback whales has been utterly amazing. People who have never, ever cared about whales or dolphins are now using their deaths as a way to block wind power and other fossil fuel alternatives.
At first, some environmentalists did raise questions about wind power stations but then it became clear that some of the whales had been hit by boats driven by the same kind of idiots who go down the Parkway at 90 miles an hour. Wind power off the coasts of Europe have not threatened whales at all.
Calling their “movement” an attempt to stop “industrialization” of the New Jersey Shore, the fossil fuel lobby has managed to hook people into believing that they are really concerned about whales. Nonsense! What they are really concerned about is protecting their view of the shore, their so-called shoreline property values, and fossil fuels. It would be interesting to see who is paying for this new surge of concern.
Prayer for the Day
Holy God, we call to you as our strength and shield,
You call us and embrace us against our fears;
Forgive us our timidity in proclaiming your word
Forgive us our reluctance to accept change and
Help us to have courage as others who proclaimed your name
Teaching us how to live so we may complete your work
In the name of him who is our model,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
There is an urgent need to stop subsidizing the fossil fuel industry, dramatically reduced wasted energy, and to significantly shift our power supplies from coal, gas, and natural gas to wind, solar, geothermal and other renewable energy sources.
- Bill McKibben, Distinguished scholars, Middlebury College, writer, educator
There is no justifiable reason why our electricity, heating and cooling and transportation needs aren’t powered 100 percent by renewable energy.
- Deb Haaland, Secretary of the Interior
O Lord, who ay abide in y our tent? Who may dwell on your holy hill?
Those who walk blamelessly, and do what is right,
And speak the truth from their heart.
Psalm 15: 1
