Most people who know me know I prefer the cool northern woods to a so-called beach paradise, like Hawaii, for instance. Now there’s now another reason to avoid that tropical paradise – chickens.  Feral chickens – I never knew there was any other kind - have taken over the streets of Honolulu.

First brought for food, hurricanes in 1982 and 1992 destroyed the coops and these little monstrosities were let loose.  Now, I do agree there’s nothing like a really fresh egg, but when you’re an 8-year old told to collect them, you acquire an abiding revulsion towards this part of God’s creation.

It would be funny if not so sad that chickens are overtaking this island that wants to create an image of a paradise on the beach. The law of unintended consequences goes far beyond Hawaii’s chicken problem.  This is but one example that should teach us to be more careful about what we do and why.

Prayer for the Day

God of all around us, pleasant and unpleasant,
Make our lives sacred as we resolve to enter your life,
Spirit of Life, open us to celebrate the simple joys of life,
So we can return some goodness to this new day.
May we have purpose in our wanderings,
As you open us to the wisdom of living
In the name of the One who shares your life with us,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

Since the end of human action, as distinct from the end products of fabrication, can never be reliably predicted, the means used to achieve political goals are more often than not of greater relevance to the future world than the intended goals.

     - Hannah Arendt, political essayist and philosopher (1906-1975)

Let's be aware of the impact we have, in all ways, and not just those ways we wish.
     - Donald T. Iannone, therapist, writer

The Lord is king! Let the earth rejoice; let the many coastlands be glad!
   Clouds and tick darkness are all around the Lord;
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of God’s throne.
Fire goes before the Lord consuming adversaries on every side.
The Lord’s lightnings light up the world; the earth sees and trembles.
The mountains melt like wax before the Lord, before the Lord of all the earth.
    Psalm 97: 1-5
