It didn’t take that long since schools opened for a former student armed with an AR-15 to enter a high school and start shooting. Fortunately, only – only? – two people died besides the shooter. One was a teacher who interposed herself between the gunman and students, the other a student. Seven were injured – luckily he was a bad shot.
Not only do we need to think about those AR-15s but how could someone have 600 rounds of ammunition? How many more must die because the mental midgets at the Supreme Court have decided that no matter what there should be no limits on guns – how about howitzers? Can’t forget those, can we?
While school shootings seem to at least grab our attention, the daily killings on our streets and in our homes which are no less deadly certainly grab less attention. I wonder what would happen when those who have been the most vocal about so-called “gun rights” find themselves find themselves facing the barrel of a gun.
Prayer for the Day
You call us to love one another and have set no limits;
But we do not love each other without reservation.
You call us to be open to the infinite number of rooms in your mansion,
But we delineate the rooms of faith with dogma and creeds.
Open our minds to your infinitude, open our hearts to your love
Given freely to all who seek to reflect you in mercy and peace,
In the name of the One who gave us a new vision of your love,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow man.
- Herman Melville, American writer (1819-1891)
The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.
- Coretta Scott King, writer and activist (1927-2006)
Do not say, “I am hidden from the Lord, and who from on high has me in mind?
Among so many people I am unknown, for what am I in a boundless creation?
Lo, heaven and the highest heaven, the abyss and the earth tremble at God.
The very mountains and the foundations of the earth
Quiver and quake when God looks upon them.
But no human mind can grasp this, and who can comprehend God’s ways?
Like a tempest that no one can see, so most of God’s works are concealed.
Sirach 16: 17-21
