It’s damp and it’s raw. The wind cuts you like a knife. It’s days like this that makes me really admire and respect the people who first came to our shores and the Native Americans who had lived here without central heat. And those immigrant ancestors of ours, they didn’t have central heat as well.

And it’s only going to get colder and wetter as the remnants of Hurricane Zeta sweep through. The rain in fall is different than the rain in summer and not only in temperature. Even a summer thunderstorm just feels different.

The animals and birds act differently, too. Looking skyward even at the bird feeder, the birds know what’s coming. Their songs sound more plaintive as they look to their Creator for protection and then huddle in the bushes that have not lost their leaves yet. Let us, too, look to our Creator to give us strength in this time.

Prayer for the Day

Fountain of life, be with us during this time of change and ferment;

     We want to drink you in like cool water on a summer’s day

          But we feel the cold damp: we need your warming presence.

Help us, Breath of life, to feel your vibrant presence among us,

     May we find true communion with each other through your grace.

           Lifting our spirits through the One we follow,

                Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen

Thoughts for the Day

Some people walk in the rain; others just get wet.

Roger Miller, songwriter

Rain makes me feel less alone. All rain is, is a cloud falling apart, and pouring its shattered pieces on top of you. It makes me feel good that I’m not the only thing that falls apart. It makes me feel better to know that other things in nature can shatter.

Lone Alaskan Gypsy, novelist

These all look to you

     to give them their food in due season;

when you give it to them, they gather it up;

     when you open your hands they are filled with good things.

When you hide your face they are dismayed;

     when you take away their breath, they die

     and return to their dust.

When you send forth your spirit, they are created

     and you renew the face of the earth.

Psalm 104:27–30
