Those poor developers.  You know, the ones who want to build in wetlands, near salt marshes, and create concrete parking lots on areas that used to absorb the impact of storms along the shore and rivers.  They’re the ones who bulldozed their way through local planning agencies, even when the neighbors cried, “Enough!”

The Trump rollbacks to environmental requirements that would make sure that people would drown when the water came up to the second floor are now being reversed so that people in a neighborhood would be heard.  The Chamber of Commerce opposes stricter standards, of course, because they speak for developers and big business.

We’ve become used to the idea that we can do whatever we want wherever we want and whenever we want.  But that’s not reality.  Nor is it desirable. We all need to learn to live within limits.  Resisting the idea of living without limits is essential to really being human.

Prayer for the Day

Searching for truths you would impart to us, O Holy One,

    We place our hearts and minds before you;

Seeking to discern the meaning of your word in our lives,

We come in humility knowing we only can see in part.

Open our eyes to the realization of limits we do not want,

But we know are ever before us.

In the name of the One who speaks to us

   Even Christ Jesus our Lord.

Thoughts for the Day

Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed.

            Mahatma Gandhi (1969-1948)

A terrible premonition washed over me. This was how the whole world would end.... They would devour the forest and excrete piles of buildings made of stone wrenched from the earth or from dead trees. They would hammer paths of bare stone between their dwellings, and dirty the rivers and subdue the land until it could recall only the will of man. . . . They no longer knew what was enough.

            Robin Hobb. American writer

See, the Lord’s hand is not too shot t save, nor God’s ear too dull to hear.

Rater your iniquities have been barriers between you and your God,

And your sins have hidden God’s face from you so that God does not hear.

            Isaiah 59: 1-2
