Toilet Paper -- Really

It was March 31, 1968.  Back then, another time, another century, we only had three major networks.  We were all stunned with the words, “I will not seek nor will I accept…” Now, the announcement is made on X, endorsing Kamala Harris for the nomination. Now, we’ll see what happens, for this is an election that will shape our future.

While the pundits mull America’s future, on a more practical, everyday level, we can continue to work for a better, more sustainable environment with our choice of --, yes, toilet paper.  You’re kidding, right?  No, because much our supply comes from cutting down boreal forest, much of the pulp coming from Canada.

Why does this matter?  Because boreal forests are the northern lungs of the world, just as important as the Amazon or forests in Indonesia.  Protecting these forests is critical. There are companies that have a more sustainable source of their pulp for their tissue products, such as Kimberly Clark and Proctor & Gamble.  Considering what we buy can and does make a difference.

Prayer for the Day

Stretched out across the waters you made so pristine, O God,

   The sounds of loons, rails, and grebes call to you;

Deep in the pines, aspens, and birches birds sing their praises,

Knowing their Creator’s hands molded them carefully.

May the beauty of your world awaken us to protect it,

An Eden of variety beyond our imagination.

In the name of the One who touches all life,

Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

The boreal forest whispers as if they were creation’s Christmas songs and this was God’s living room.

            Angela Abraham, author

In the boreal forests there is reason to hope that we’ll guide the human part of this relationship with forethought. Over the last two decades, continent wide planning for conservation, forestry, and industry in the boreal forest have brought people together who have fought for years in the law courts.

David George Haskell, biologist, from The Songs of Trees

Fools fold their hands and consume their own flesh.

Better is a handful with quiet than two handfuls with toll

      And a chasing after wind.

            Ecclesiastes 4: 5-6
