Truth Isn't the Only Casualty of War

We knew it was coming; the only question was when would it happen.  Now, it’s happening now.  FCC Chair Brendan Carr has now threatened to pull the licenses of news media outlets that don’t report the bombing of Iran as the new Great Patriotic War.  Oh, I’m sorry, I forgot that’s what the Russians call World War 2.

Carr said that the President doesn’t like “fake news.”  In other words, we really didn’t bomb a school, killing over 170 persons, mostly schoolgirls, because we were using intelligence data more than10 years old.   And he didn’t like the way the media covered the damage to U.S. military aircraft, accusing them of wanting the U.S. to “lose the war.” We’re only supposed to see honor in lives lost and American families in grief.

Sounds a bit like the Pharisees accusing Jesus of fake news when he said the kingdom of God is near, at hand. The powers in Jesus’ time really objected to his fake news. Good thing he didn’t have a broadcast license to lose.  Jesus’ fake news only ended up getting him crucified.  Wonder what they all thought that Easter morning.

Prayer for the Day

From our ways of self-deception and self-indulgence,

    We come before you, O God, searching our hearts;

Move us beyond our preoccupation with our own lives and desires

    And awaken us to the destruction of lives in our name.

Turn our hearts and deeds towards the world beyond

     So we turn our lives around and truly care for one another.

In the name of the One who offers us strength,

     Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

The first casualty when war comes is truth.

            Hiram Johnson, U.S. Senator (1866-1945)

Women have always been the primary victims of war. Women lose their husbands, their fathers, their sons in combat.

            Hillary Clinton, Former Secretary of State

Rebuke the wild beasts that live among the reeds,

   The herds of bulls with the calves of the peoples.

Trample underfoot those who lust after tribute;

   Scatter the peoples who delight in war.

          Psalm 68: 30
