A new report on the U.S. “power sector” by InfluenceMap indicates that only four of the largest 25 power companies are engaging positively with climate change. The largest power company in New Jersey, Public Service, which owns several power suppliers, is one of them.  Most power companies still operate in the dark ages.  Oh dear, that’s a treble pun.

Over half of U.S. companies are fighting a transition from fossil fuel.  Ths puts us way behind European companies which have transitioned way ahead of the U.S. by suing wind and solar power.  One European country, in fact, sells its excess energy to others.

If we want the goals of COP26 to work, we must put pressure on Congress and the Executive to seriously use their influence and power to get old fossil-minded utilities to shift their opposition into opportunity.  Our future is counting on us.  God does wondrous things, to be sure, but even God could use a little help from friends – that’s us.

Prayer for the Day

Easter astounds us, O God, because it evidences your power
     To bring life from death, love from hate, and joy from pain;
We want to manage your creation, O God, to put everything in little boxes,
      But you confound us by surprise and we know not what to do.
Bring us into the understanding that your love is infinite,
      Beyond our knowledge of the world we live in.
In the name of the One who shares your infinite love,
       Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen

Thoughts for the Day

With a quarter of U.S. emissions stemming from the power sector, and its potential for decarbonizing the economy, effective climate policies must be enacted to promote a rapid shift away from fossil fuels for power generation.
     - Christine Herman, Director Climate & Environmental Justice Program, ICCR

To rapidly make progress on cutting carbon, we must clean up the power sector.  But too many companies are still delaying acting.
      - Leah Stokes, Professor, UCal, Santa Barbara

Love righteousness, you rulers of the earth, think of the Lord n goodness,
   And seek God with sincerity of heart;
For God is found by those who do not put the Lord to the test,
   And is manifested to those who do not distrust the Lord.
    Wisdom of Solomon 1: 1-2
