We usually think of the effects of the climate crisis as global, apart from us, but this year the climate crisis hits home in ways we might not expect.  Schools in many communities have been affected because of heat.  More than 40 percent of our public schools need to be updated in terms of ventilation, cooling, and heating, How could you learn in either a sweltering classroom or one that is freezing in January?

And just when we thought we only needed to worry about schools, we need to also worry about power blackouts, especially in very, very hot summers.  Today’s weather forecaster said today was hot –no, it was warm.  Hot is over 90.  It only hit 86.

It’s still spring so at least our warm days still have cool nights. And we’re supposed to have a strawberry moon tonight.  Last night the super moon shone through the leaves of trees.  Quite extraordinary, really, as the night began to cool down here unlike other parts of the world and our own country.

Prayer for the Day

Eternal Spirit of goodness, you have given us a world of beauty,
    But we have not cared for your creation as we should;
Our vision is limited and we find excuses for not changing our ways,
    Because we are comfortable with things the way they are.
Shake us from our complacency for our inaction has consequences,
    Which are beyond what we now experience.
In the name of the One who calls us to action, not words,
    Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

The moon is a loyal companion. It never leaves. It’s always there, watching, steadfast, knowing us in our light and dark moments, changing forever just as we do. Every day it’s a different version of itself. Sometimes weak and wan, sometimes strong and full of light. The moon understands what it means to be human. Uncertain. Alone. Cratered by imperfections.”

     - Tahereh Mafi, American children’s writer, from Shatter Me

We are going to the moon that is not very far. Man has so much farther to go within himself.”

      - Anaïs Nin, writer (1903-1977)

Yours is the day, yours also the night; you established the luminaries and the sun.
   You have fixed all the bounds of the earth; you made summer and winter.
    Psalm 74: 16-17
