Right on the heels of the UN climate report on the warming planet, weather forecasters tell us we will have a warmer spring than usual. And the President just issued his first veto pushing back an effort by the climate-change nay-sayers to ban the government from considering environmental issues in retirement accounts.  What are these people thinking?

One would have thought that the environment is one issue we could all agree on, but that obviously is not the case.  Fueled by fear of any kind of change in our society, the know-nothings just plow on. What is it about science that makes people so afraid?

This isn’t the first time some people have stood rigidly against science.  Galileo, faced with the instruments of Inquisition torture, recanted the fact that the earth revolves around the sun, and it was less than a hundred years ago that science teacher Thomas Scopes was charged with teaching evolution.  It’s easier to hold onto the myths of the past than to critically think about the future.

Prayer for the Day

A thousand years are like a day in your sight, O God,
   But many cannot fathom your eternity;
We cringe at the thought of change not recognizing
The true sense of your changelessness.
Open our eyes, O Lord, moving us beyond our parochialism,
So we can embrace the essential truths you offer us.
In the name of the One who was unafraid of the truth,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen

Thoughts for the Day

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.
     - Franklin D. Roosevelt, President (1882-1945)

We can forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life
is when men are afraid of the light.
     - Plato, philosopher (428-347 BCE)

Lord, you have been our dwelling place for all generations.
Before the mountains were brought forth,
Or ever you had formed the earth and the world,
From everlasting to everlasting you are God.
You turn us back to dust, and say, “Turn back, you mortals.”
A thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past,
Or like a watch in the night.
     Psalm 90: 1-4
