How many times will we see such videos, children holding hands being evacuated from a school building in the aftermath of yet another school shooting? How many times will we hear such meaningless phrases as “thoughts and prayers” as our elected officials do absolutely NOTHING?

Oh, but we must protect the sacred Second Amendment from those who would deny us our opportunity to own and use an AR-15.  We shouldn’t respond just because we have another mass shooting, oh no, that’s only reacting to the horror of destroyed lives.  We certainly must all have our opportunity to use such instruments to kill. And, in the midst of this, there is a fury about children seeing a photo of Michelangelo’s statue of David than about the safety of children in schools.  What is wrong with us?

And Congress just sits. My cats move more quickly than Congress.  What on earth is wrong with us that we permit such slaughter?  And Covenant Christian wasn’t the only school shooting yesterday.  There was another one in Seattle, but it won’t count – only one student dead. There have been 13 school schootings this year and it’s only March.

Prayer for the Day

We know, O God of justice, what is required of us, yet we falter;
    We know, O God of mercy, what we need to do, yet we hesitate;
We see the evil in the world around and use helplessness as an excuse,
    But you tug at our sleeves and call us to respond to the cries we hear.
Move us, O Holy Spirit, beyond the excuses we create for ourselves,
   So we may live faithfully according to your Gospel.
We ask this in the name of the One who shows us how to live,
    Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

If you are ready to assist, please pass sensible gun laws so that the children of Tennessee and America at large might attend school without risk of being gunned down.
     - Sheryl Crow, Nashville singer

We have to do more to stop gun violence — it’s ripping our communities apart, ripping the soul of this nation. We have to do more to protect our schools, so they aren’t turned into prisons.
      - President Joe Biden, on hearing of the Nashville shooting

How lonely sits the city that was once full of people!
   How like a widow she has become, she that was great among the nations!
