The Institute for Research on Education and Human Rights, established in 1983, has put out an extensive report on how far-right hate groups have infiltrated our political life, even into what we call the mainstream. No state is exempt from having its legislators as members of such groups.
This is true of all states, including ours in the Northeast. Some of these groups claim they stand for sensible approaches to educational curricula but oppose the mention of LGBT persons or even the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s. Some of these legislators are against Critical Race Theory although they couldn’t explain it if asked.
The so-called Christian right, and other far right groups are in a symbiotic relationship with white nationalism and other hate groups that turn a blind eye to violence, claiming it is only on the fringe. The problem is the fringe has supporters in our State Legislatures even in progressive states. Ten dead in Buffalo, 21 in Texas two years ago. These large massacres shock us, but it’s the small everyday violence that goes unnoticed.
Prayer for the Day
Unable to pretend that we are something we are not
Because you have searched us and know us, O God,
We flounder in despair, hopelessness, and fear,
Although they close the doors to living faithfully.
Awaken us by your Holy Spirit to a fuller dimension of faith
Leading us to find in our communities opportunities for justice.
In the name of the One who shows us a new way to live,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite
- Nelson Mandela, South Africa (1918-2013)
You cannot hate other people without hating yourself.
- Oprah Winfrey, television personality
For you are nt a God who delights in wickedness; evil will not sojourn with you.
The boastful will not stand before your eyes; you hate all evildoers.
You destroy those who speak lies; the Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful.
Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness because of my enemies;
Psalm 5, 3-6, 8
