We tend to think of graduates of certain universities and law schools as steady persons, not likely to take what most people would consider off-the-wall positions.  Now, meet Kelly Tshibaka, Harvard Law graduate, attorney in Alaska, and challenger to U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski.  Not from the left, mind you, but from the right, the far right.

She is now trying to wheedle herself out of the editorial she wrote in 2001 supporting conversion therapy for the LGBTQIA community.  Homosexuals are “merely sinners like everyone else,” she wrote.  They just need to follow Christ and they can be “cured.”

She has taken important political stands against witchcraft and the “Twilight” books.  These are the crucial issues Alaska and the country face, of course. And, to think we were stunned by Tommy Tuberville from Alabama whose main claim to fame was coaching the Auburn University’s football team. Is this the “new normal?”

Prayer for the Day

Like the Psalmist, we want to cry, “Deliver us, O Lord!”

   As we wonder what on earth is happening around us;

Where are you, O God, when we need your guidance?

For it seems like the world around us has gone awry.

Grace us with your wisdom so we have insight

   To build constructive communities.

In the name of him who speaks to our fears,

Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen

Thoughts for the Day

Conspiracy theories are really attractive. Figuring out patterns is one of the things that gets your brain to give you a nice dose of chemical reward, the little ping of dopamine and whatever else that keeps you smiling.

                        Elizabeth Bear, American author

Believing in a conspiracy theory is one strategy people use to regain a sense of control, even if the conspiracy theory is unrelated to what caused the lack of control in a person’s life.

Oscar Auliq-Ice, Foundation for Social Investment

In return for their foolish and wicked thoughts, which led them astray

To worship irrational serpents and worthless animals,

You sent upon them a multitude of irrational creatures to punish them,

So they might learn that one is punished by the very things by which one sins.

                        Wisdom of Solomon 11:15-16
