We say we’re all worried about the impending climate catastrophe we face but how many of us are willing to change our lifestyles to make a difference.  Yes, yes, I know:  we recycle bottles and cans; we sort out paper and recycle plastic bags.   And then we feel good about ourselves.

The question gets asked:  how much are we willing to change our behaviors for a more sustainable planet?  It means more than recycling bottles and cans.  It really means changing how we live, not just individually, but as a society.

A recent survey of people in ten countries indicated that almost half of those surveyed felt they did not want to change their habits which included using public transport over cars, reducing the consumption of meat, changing buying habits, to name a few. Just over half felt that recycling, stopping deforestation and protecting species were most important, but did not see the connection between one and the other.  How are you willing to change the way you live now for a greener planet? That is the question.

Prayer for the Day

Caught between our desire to be like your disciples

    But unwilling to make the sacrifices necessary,

We worry more about our place in the realm you seek to bring

    Than living as if your redeeming love really matters.

Seeking rewards for our service, we expect the world’s praise;

    Move us past our self-centered sense of accomplishment,

So we may be more like the model of our lives,

    Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.

            George Bernard Shaw, English writer and activist (1856-1950)

The truth does not change according to our ability to stomach it

            Flannery O’Connor, American writer (1925-1964)

Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean;

   Remove the evil of your doings before my eyes;

Cease to do evil, learn to do good; seek justice; rescue the oppressed,

   Defend the orphan, plead for the widow.

            Isaiah 1: 16-17
