It’s raining and there’s a flash flood watch again for northeast New Jersey, southeastern Connecticut, and New York City and environs.  It’s a Nor’easter which is predicted to bring a month’s worth of rain in a day.  Well, at least it’s not hurricane remnants, but the storms are more frequent and more intense.

One would think that the climate catastrophe holdouts would see the reality of what’s happening in front of their eyes. But most of them are too anxious to hold onto their semblances of power fueled by oil and gas money that they just refuse to see what’s killing their states and districts.

The really amazing thing in all this is how they manage to hold onto power while people suffer. One would think that people would respond to the increasing frequency of storms, fires, and drought, not to mention the receding shoreline along the East Coast. One would think.

Prayer for the Day

May we remember that the earth is not for sale,

   That to harm her is to harm ourselves;

May we consider her power of wind and rain,

That she will take vengeance for our neglect.

You, O God, who created her and the heavens,

Open our eyes and empower us to protect your work.

In the name of the One who walked on the earth,

Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

The rain set early in tonight,/The sullen wind was soon awake,
It tore the elm-tops down for spite,/And did its best to vex the lake:

I listened with heart fit to break.

            Robert Browning, English poet (1812-1889)

For most of the history of our species we were helpless to understand how nature works.  We took every drought, storm, illness and comet personally.  We created myths and spirits in an attempt to explain the patterns of nature.

Ann Druyan, science writer and Emmy producer for Carl Sagan

Blessed by the Lord be the land, with the precious gifts of heaven,

With the dew, and the deep that lies beneath,

With the precious fruits brought forth by the sun, and The riches brought by the moon,

With the greatness of the ancient mountains, with the abundance of the everlasting hills, and with all the treasures of the earth in its perfection.

          -Deuteronomy 33:13-16
